Urban Forest 2.0 : Thousands come together to plant trees at Mahindra World City, Chennai!

The second edition of the urban afforestation drive held at Mahindra World City (MWC), Chennai witnessed participation by 5000 volunteers from different walks of life, including residents, students and corporate employees. Shri. D Jayakumar, Minister of Fisheries, Personnel and Administrative Reforms, Government of Tamil Nadu was the chief guest at the plantation drive held today. Mr. W V Raman, former Indian cricketer and current coach of the India women’s national cricket team also attended as guest of honour. So far, over 3 lakh trees have been planted across 110 acres at Mahindra World City, Chennai over the course of two years, as part of efforts to grow the city’s green cover. Commenting on the initiative, Vijayan Janardhanan, Business Head, Mahindra World City, Chennai said, “Planned integrated cities such as Mahindra World City, Chennai have been designed keeping in mind the needs of the environment and that of future generations. It is heartening to see thousands of volunteers come together for the cause of the planet in one of India’s most impactful urban afforestation drives.” Over dozens of native species of trees were planted to enrich the biodiversity of the region These trees will be nurtured for three years, after which they will strengthen by developing trunks and root systems on their own. These trees will help reduce the carbon footprint of the surrounding area.
